The trim series was inspired by the large collection of trim my grandmother kept in her sewing room. It was a mine of creative potential and an artery to humble roots. Like many Pennsylvania Dutch women, she cut collars, trim and cuffs from worn clothing to adorn another at a later time. Lace, crocheted “lace”, counted thread linens, embroidered details, machined trim, rickrack and tatting were all represented in her collection. In creating “Homemade” I sought to emphasize qualities of modernist design linking and elevating low art to high, feminine to masculine. Focusing on measuring, repetition and the compression of expression into economy of gesture the work mimics both the comfort and sanctity of the intimate/family/home and the contained parameters of women’s domestic expression.
